XANA

XANA, a true story…

…But XANA was different from her 3 sisters, since the day she was born in the Nalón estuary while her mother washed, she was already blessed to foresee the future throughout her life and save lives…

"What XANA predicted comes true, her fourth daughter, María Elvira Ponce Garcia, is born. At just 7 years old, she won the first Spanish Song Award on Radio Nacional de España. The voice of Orange begins to conquer Valencia..."

XANA tried to live as far as possible away from the impact left by the post-war period on the streets, where diseases such as chickenpox outbreaks or the typhus epidemic spread very quickly and infected more and more people.

Living near the sea was an air of essential freedom and the Singer machine was already beginning to vibrate sewing the outfits for the twins who were about to be born. Nobody told XANA that she was carrying two babies, but she knew, because she had noticed 4 little feet that danced to the rhythm of the Spanish song that played every morning in her house while she was sewing. Letters of emigration, poverty, broken dreams, lost loves... the Virgen del Socorro began to show signs of light from time to time. Something was going to happen. That night XANA received a visit in her dreams from her mother, Elvira, who told her; —I don't want you to be sad, you are a believing, Asturian and strong woman. But only the girl will survive and with her hands when she grows up, she will be able to heal.
God would not allow anything bad for you, if it were not because something good will bring you. The child will be an angel and you will see the essence of him reflected in the two grandchildren that your daughter María Elvira will give you: Ismael and Daniel. And in your three great-grandchildren who will only be boys and that you will guide and protect from heaven. You will save the life of the first great-grandson, which is the mission that God wanted for you.

In the bars it was still remembered how the “Franquistas “ planes dropped leaflets instead of bombs on Valencia, or how the order came —“Valencia is ours. Everybody in the street. Go Spain! " Franco ! Franco!
D. Emilio, always had admirers around his table, who liked to hear how he went incognito and without uniform, to "La Capitalilla" as Caudete de las Fuentes was called, to help those who had been left with nothing . It was located on one of the natural routes between Madrid and Valencia and was heavily populated since the Bronze Age. Its geography, criss-crossed with boulevards and springs where people could go to collect holy water from its fountains, was a tradition. The Colonel always came home with bottles full of water for XANA. This time, he filled a glass container with the patron saint of the town, San Antonio Abad, born in the town of Comas, in Lower Egypt. Who at the age of 20 sold all his possessions, gave his fortune to the poor and retired to live in a sepulchral cave... XANA had asked him to baptize her children with that water.

There were two years left for the end of World War II.
Colonel Ponce was in Madrid, inviting his friends to a few glasses of wine, Chato de Vino, which he had brought from the Iberian city of KELIN in Caudete de las Fuentes, while he told them with great enthusiasm, the discovery in the S. V of several seeds of grapes in the remains of ceramics and hence the great culture for wine in his homeland and his fondness for Chato de vino.
—! Franco and Hitler had a 7-hour meeting at a railway station next to the Spanish-French border that was useless, the Colonel explained to his friends. —Hitler did not give in because he thought that what Franco was asking for were exorbitant demands and in the end they signed a secret protocol…
The Colonel, this time would not return home alone, he was accompanied by a new member of the family, a beautiful German Shepherd puppy named Choco.

April 9, 1943, spring in Valencia was quite a spectacle, the orange trees are filled with hermaphroditic flowers, with a male organ with stamens that carry pollen and a female one with an ovary and its ovules. As a result of the perfect hand of God, the seductive and captivating perfume of the orange blossom appears, Flor de Azahar. Wich prompted XANA to go out with her children and Choco, to take a boat ride on the lagoon, from the Arabic al-Buhayra " the lake". It was formed 1.8 million years ago. In 1902, the Valencian writer Vicente Blasco Ibañez wrote the novel "La Barraca" which tells the unfortunate story of a poor family of fishermen from El Palmar. XANA had read it repeatedly to her children and they really liked going to the fresh and salt water lagoon, to see the barracas in the water, the beautiful sunsets and the migratory birds and fish, surrounded by 223 kilometers of rice fields Under water.
That day the sun shone in a special way, a flock of seagulls flew very high forming a heart in the sky. XANA and her children couldn't take their eyes off the message they were receiving, until a common black-winged stilt caught her attention. She came walking delicately over the water, using her extremely long, thin, red legs to perch on the boat. With her long, thin black beak, she touched XANA's belly, announcing the arrival of a being of light and love. XANA broke water in the boat and as her mother did in her day, when she had her in the Nalón estuary, she used the powers of the energy of the sun and water and attracted the colonel to the lagoon to take them home.
That night there was one less star in the sky and one more baby on earth. María Elvira Ponce García, instead of crying at birth, gave her first musical notes with the voice of an angel, the voice that her twin left her. XANA hung a gold chain with the virgin of the forsaken, which was found floating in the water when she was very little, on one of her trips to the fountain, in San Juan de la Arena and that she never knew until they were assigned to Valencia who was the patron saint of the city of the Turia.

Choco, didn't leave Maria Elvira's crib, he didn't let anyone in her room when she was sleeping and he told XANA when it was her turn to breastfeed her.
Her older brothers, Emilio and Carmina, took care of her as she was their daughter. They were 14 and 15 years older and called her Elvirita.
Elvirita was a girl full of joy, with the same character as her grandmother, Elvira, as she herself had predicted. She didn't know how to speak but she already sang the Spanish copla like nobody else.
She liked that her mother sewed her dresses for her , using gold thread and she was the right eye of the Colonel.

XANA was sewing her husband's uniform, when he came through the door screaming in pain. The colonel was returning from Madrid where the Typhus epidemic had been lethal, transmitted by lice that lived in places with poor hygienic conditions, typical of the trenches, among others. It gave you a very high fever and decreased your state of consciousness, causing liver failure and death within a few days. Months later, the epidemic ended in Spain.
XANA, immediately called the doctor. She even saw his belly that was swollen and about to explode. ! He had been bitten by a rat repeatedly! And the bacteria Streptobacillus moniliformis was reaching his bloodstream, causing him a very high fever and a lot of vomiting. The doctor arrived immediately, accompanied by a priest as was the custom, to give him extreme unction in the event of her death. Amoxicillin hadn't been discovered yet and the doctor would try to lower the fever, cut the poison out of it, but they didn't give him much hope of surviving. He was purple and could barely breathe.

XANA suddenly left everyone in the living room and went into the room called by the voice of her miraculous Virgen del Socorro, the patron saint of military health, which came from the sewing machine; —Tell everyone to leave, show the Lord your faith, and he will cure him… XANA came out telling everyone to please leave. The doctor told her that if he left, her husband would die, but XANA once again demonstrated her faith in God and she told the priest what the virgin had told her. — Let them wait in the street, that the father of her children was going to get well. The doctor did not wait and left angry telling everyone that Doña Carmen had gone crazy. The priest waited impatiently for the miracle.
XANA remembered her mother's dream, where she told her that María Elvira would have healing power in her hands and she ran to her room for her. She told her to put her hands on the huge belly, while she was praying an Our Father,... after long 5 minutes, the Colonel's stomach had deflated, the color of his skin returned to normal, he began to breathe and he was already asking Carminina, which was how he affectionately called her, a glass of wine. Un chato de vino .
The doctor went upstairs because he didn't believe what the priest had told them had happened. And D. Emilio threw him out of his house, and made him run down the stairs, while he went after him with the pistol in his hand, telling him; —If I see you around here again, I'll kill you!

Radio Nacional de España was officially inaugurated in Valencia in 1949. The first years were devoted to musical programs and a Spanish song contest was organized in the Plaza de Toros. María Elvira appeared when she was only 7 years old. She dressed in a suit that she designed herself and that XANA sewed a little reluctantly, although she never told her so as not to take away her illusion... she didn't really like the idea that her daughter was a singer. But it was inevitable, the Voice of Orange, as her father called her, sang with such a sweet color of voice and such perfect tuning, that it transported you to a world of beauty and passion such as the copla. Valencia was a land of musicians and the Valencian voices famous for their Mediterranean melody. Conchita Marquez Piquer was also presenting. Being the daughter of the queen of copla, Doña Concha Piquer, everyone assumed that she would win. But it was María Elvira who won the first prize performing “Ojos Verdes” by maestro Manuel Quiroga. The queen of the Copla , signed an autograph to her on her photo. Surely at that moment she put a curse on her, but The Voice of Orange was protected by an angel. Many children attended that public day, among them was Blanca María Alvarez Delgado, 11 years old, the first child member of RNE. Blanca, very excited, went to congratulate the winner, María Elvira, who was very perky and with a great sense of humor, told Blanca; —Your name is like a messenger pigeon I am sure that we will see each other again in the future and that my mother XANA has placed you in my destiny to be my best friend and take care of me… On the most important radio in Spain, María Elvira, the Voice of Orange, was already playing at all hours.

XANA was preparing Carmina's wedding, as her mother announced on her deathbed, she would get married in a carriage pulled by 7 virgin horses and that was it. She married like a princess, with Don Federico Carbonell Antoli, Maxillofacial Professor, Son of Don Carlos Carbonell Penella, senior architect of the Valencia City Council and president of the Circle of Fine Arts of Valencia. Carmina danced and played the castanets wonderfully, she never took dance classes, it was innate in her. She looked Andalusian, a beauty who commanded attention wherever she went, with long jet-black hair and mulberry-black eyes. On a trip on the Talgo, which had just opened, Madrid-Valencia, the Colonel took his daughter to Madrid to try on her wedding dress and they shared a car with the famous film director, Carlos Saura, who as soon as he saw her, he have no hesitation in offering her a leading role in his next film. Carmina went crazy with happiness, but at that time, she would have to choose between being famous or a good wife and staying at home with the 6 children she had.

Three years had passed, XANA had just given birth to her fifth baby, María Amparo Ponce Garcia, and Elvirita went alone to her piano class. Blanca's father, the doctor from Lugo, D. Osvaldo Alvarez Zapico, had a private practice where he treated radio journalists, including his good friend the Director of the Valencian Press Association, Mr. José Barbera Armelles, father of Rita Barbera, the one who would become Mayor of Valencia and who vaccinated so many times. D. Osvaldo Alvarez was well known in high society for performing the first puncture in the brain at the General Hospital of Valencia. He was passionate about music and played the violin very well. One day he took Blanca to the house of her close friend, the husband of his music teacher, and what was Blanca's surprise, when she found María Elvira sitting at the piano. It was the second time they met and from that moment they became inseparable. Blanca was 14 years old and the Voice of Orange was 10. Blanca's mother, Doña Blanca Delgado Vidal, was from Madrid, she grew up in a mansion on Calle Serrano in the Salamanca district that it even had its own chapel. She was a modern woman, tall and beautiful, she smoked with a cigarette holder, she went into bars where there were only men and she wore a cape. So in Valencia, she drew a lot of attention from her. Her mother, Blanca's grandmother, was Doña Angeles Vidal from Ariztizabal, she had the title of Marquesa de Burguillo and they welcomed Elvirita as another daughter. It was no coincidence that her friend Blanca lived next to the parish of Nuestra Señora del Socorro...

1957, it was the Pilar bridge, on October 12 it began to rain in Valencia with such force that the newspaper Las Provincias , already announced that the Turia riverbed had risen. The next day, the first alarm calls were received in the Civil Government and on the 4th it was already official, the river overflowed as it passed through the city and a tragedy was formed, the Great Flood! In a single day more than 80 people died and the material damage was multimillionaires.
XANA and her family had to leave the house because of the danger of destruction. People went in boats from one place to another trying to help each other and taking the most necessary. XANA made a high bow and her daughters too and there she put all her jewels. When they were more or less safe, they missed Choco, who was already very old and stayed locked up in the house. XANA did not hesitate for a second, and despite the advice of the neighbors and the authorities not to return, she got into the water and swam against the current, avoiding the elderly, children, furniture and appliances, to the soundtrack of cries for help. , fear and uncertainty, for miles to save her partner and faithful friend. When she entered the house, Choco was under the sewing machine, it was a sign... they came back riding on top of her Singer, who floated, and thus fulfilled the promise that her mother made to her , not to separate from it.
When the gates of the swamp were opened, the flooding was greater, the sewers burst and took out the waste. The American fleet had arrived at the port of Valencia a few days ago, and they behaved like heroes helping in any way they could. As the army was not enough to clean the streets, they cleaned all the mud from the city. They also offered their food to the most affected.
XANA recounted how they were given jars with a cheese ball inside that was delicious, powdered milk and helped to place ropes between buildings to pass the food in baskets, between neighbors. The doctors were trapped in the hospitals and the Americans saved and helped a woman give birth at the Cross of the Fallen.

Don't miss the next chapter! Chap.4

La Voz de Naranja, 14 years old, used to hid in a room at Radio Nacional de España when she got bored of rehearsing… her voice was like silk and powerful. She was the pretty girl on the radio and she had everyone in a frenzy!…

Pa mi ya no hay soles, luseros ni luna

No hay más que unos ojos que mi vía son

Unleash Your Inner Flamenca is dedicated to all the women of the world and it does not mean that you have to be flamenco or dedicate yourself to the world of dance. It is an expression, it is a way of facing the setbacks that life gives us and because flamenco has that attitude of: Here I am!

Unleashing my inner Flamenca has helped me in many very extreme situations in my life and, not only technically speaking as a flamenco professional, but in those times that I didn't have to be dancing, or teaching, or competing, or performing on stage. I’m talking about everyday life.

That is why you too can bring out your inner Flamenca.

A flamenca woman is confident, a flamenca woman is sure of herself, has gravitas, has bearing, has wisdom and knows how to be in command.

In other words, unleash your inner Flamenca and join me in this adventure in which we are going to have a great time! We know how it starts and we don't know how it ends, but it is sure to be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life.

I didn't need to be famous to sleep in Hemingway's Presidential suite at the Gritti Palace in Venice for all my birthdays.

Have a Bellini while I wait for the gondola that will take me to the private Film Festival party on the yacht of my colleague, who was a Versace collaborator, or dine on the famous terrace of the Hotel Danieli.

It is also true that if I had slept with all my stalkers, I would now be more famous than Sara Baras. BUT! no matter how much I took a shower, the smell of vomit would not go away from my body and the phrase of: “how did I get it” would be the soundtrack of my life, which would turn my insides with each applause.

Nor did I need to be famous to have a bodyguard escort me to the door of the plane, in the direction of the American Embassy in Beirut or go in a Limousine and drink the best champagne.

“Todo lo he conseguido con pasión, seguridad en mi misma , esfuerzo y dedicación”.

Proving first to myself and then to the whole world that I don't need to sell myself to a man to succeed in my career. And that I bring out the inner Flamenca every time they cross my path.

Do not allow any man to command you or demand what you have to do.

Lucha por lo que quieras, viste como quieras, maquíllate como quieras , estudia lo que quieras y júntate con quien quieras.

The first time a man lays his hand on you, it will be his fault, but the second time it will be your fault for putting up with the first time.

And if you feel trapped and you are afraid to stand up to your reality, look for a way as if it were the last day of your life to give a signal at the pharmacy, at the market, to a neighbor you come across, to anyone who can hear this number: 016! and it will be the first step to your salvation, to your new life, surely filled with all the good things you long for and where no one will let you back down. You will immediately be protected by the society that will protect and help you without conditions. And I, Esther Ponce, am already thinking of you.

UNLEASH YOUR INNER FLAMENCA #SACALAFLAMENCA

I have suffered more than 10 workplace harassments from very famous people in the world of show business, and knowing what I now know, I would have denounced it.

A I’m going to tell you how I brought out the flamenco that I have in extreme situations and that I hope and serve to help some woman to do the same as me.

For now I'm only going to use nicknames.

“If I had slept with all my stalkers, I would now be more famous than Sara Baras. "

With my testimony and my own experience, living in different countries of the world and interacting with all kinds of social classes, race, culture and religion, I want to turn around the drama that women experience in the world.
That they are not alone... that they unleash their inner flamenca A strong and self-confident woman, the director of their own life. That she clings to the ground with temperance and ready to scratch at any moment if necessary and fight life with the best smile...

I have experiences and anecdotes to tell all women; the neighborhood ones, the rich ones , the conflictive ones, the addicted ones, etc. And always with my motto that to run away from any situation, the best thing is to practice athletics! … My uncle used to called me Dance Athlete, he said; As long as you have strong legs and a strong heart, you can fly! .

Esther Ponce's experimental Flamenco is ready for the Valencian Director of Tourism to meet

It is very gratifying to have an idea like the experimental Flamenco in Valencia, carry it out and have managed to attract more than 20 foreign clients to Valencia in a short time and without marketing, who have passed through the Flamenco Art Center, and who have not only They learned a lot if not they have returned to their country with a better concept of Valencia.

His experience and approach to flamenco led by Esther Ponce will make you return without hesitation to the city of Turia.

Esther Ponce not only surrounds them with her passion and charisma from the first moment, her professionalism and a very long journey through different countries of the world where she has lived for long periods, she makes them fall in love.

You just have to read the dedications of all the foreigners who write in their precious notebook created for them and that are already adding more and more.

«They also buy semi-professional shoes and a skirt to study with me.» That’s already the best! –
~ Esther Ponce

The foreigner is used to teaching flamenco very quickly and without discipline, anything goes, any shoe, any skirt, hanging out even parodying and even ridiculing flamenco.

With me if they want to study two private hours which is the minimum, they are given the option of buying or renting the shoes and none of them have thought twice about it to this day.

«Being a polyglot, doors just open up to me» –
~ Esther Ponce

Definitely the Experimental Flamenco of Esther Ponce has an Angel!

From England, without a doubt the most special Experimental Flamenco we have had at the Flamenco Art Center in these two and a half years.

The Esther Ponce Stylized Flamenco Art Center has been open for two and a half years. El Ángel Every August 28, for Esther’s birthday, a new foreign student gives her a gift and the flamenco toast intensifies.

«The students do not want to miss the opportunity to study with me. When they start to study my technique they are hooked at the first second. Those who play sports and take care of themselves immediately identify with my stretching and feel safer for the rest of the class and those who don’t appreciate it and will surely start practicing it and taking care of themselves forever »
~ Esther Ponce

This year Esther thought that her Angel would be very busy due to the current pandemic situation and also that it would be a coincidence that another year happened.

But to Esther’s surprise it was like that and without doubt the most special flamenco toast for England.

«Discipline is my hallmark and not even the Covid has stopped us» «I have never doubted it and I will only teach classes with a mask»
~ Esther Ponce

After the experience of teaching classes with a mask? A private flamenco class for two hours without stopping, does Esther remember that when she and the student went out into the street they breathed for two seconds as if there were no tomorrow?According to Esther’s recent experience, with the mask you cannot see the total expression of the student, but the eyes also speak and flamenco is also expressed with the body.

With all the safety measures, the student disinfected her shoes, put hydroalcoholic gel on her hands, a temperature control was performed with a non-contact forehead thermometer and the student did not remove her mask during the two hours, only in the changing room that she only used to drink water.

“Now I can present my Experimental Flamenco to the director of Tourism of Valencia and let him roll with the little ham :)”

~ Esther Ponce
