THE DANCER AND THE DIPLOMAT

BIOGRAPHY

Three years full of surreal adventures, successfully at a frenetic rhythm in Los Angeles, California

"Trapped in a Limousine with two policemen who only had the guns as their clothes"

It was Yelena Aguilar birthday and she had invited the model, the Univisión presenter and me to have lunch. Each of us was picked up by the limousine in which the party would continue throughout the afternoon until the super dinner that Yelena would give at her mansion in Los Feliz.

At lunch it was just us and Yelena's husband, which surprised me quite a bit that he was the only man.

The idea of touring the city of LA by limousine was fine because with so many classes I didn't have much time for sightseeing. I asked Yelena how long the tour would take since I should be back at school before 8pm when my flamenco class started. With his big smile, this time with a touch more mischievous than usual, she told me not to worry about anything that would drop me off in time for my class on Olympic Blvd.

We were getting further and further away from the city and the cold bottles of champagne were flying. Yelena's husband sat presiding, occupying the two back seats with his legs spread and super comfortable as if he were going to see a show. Priscilla, who also had duties to attend to, and my self sat on the side and without drinking we commented between nervous laughter why Yelena and the TV presenter were sitting in front of him.

We made the first stop at a Santa Barbara gas station an hour and a half away from LA . I was already starting to get nervous, according to my calculations, we could only stand 30m and get back to the city in time for class. I called Paul who offered to pick me up but I told him not to worry that I was hoping to be on time.

Yelena was super calm and asked the driver to lower the privacy glass. Her husband sat in his place leaving space for the two policemen who entered and closed the door while saying: - You know that you are breaking the law and we are going to have to arrest you. I was freaking out! Without stopping watching the movie and Priscilla looked like I think I'm going to take out Maria again while filling everyone's glasses. A police officer approached the presenter and handcuffed her hands behind her body, the other told Yelena to please sit next to her husband to take a statement while they undressed little by little, pulling on the fake clothes stuck with Velcro and that's when you realize it's the tacky birthday present from Yelena's husband that she and him would enjoy the show. The policeman, now alone with the pistols, began to undress the presenter, while the other policeman, after making Yelena confess, took her to his colleague's side and thus the fat husband as a bear was limited to watching. I think I still wore the submissive and puritanical flamenco woman deeply rooted in my skin and macho customs that I felt totally out of place and worst of all, we didn't move and I no longer came to my class and Paul was in school since he was my student, to justify himself and apologize on my behalf.

It was the first time in almost two years that I would be late or skip a class and not in 15 years as a teacher. I was disgusted to be trapped in a limousine having to see the hell the private parts of Yelena 30 years older than me, drunk as a vat at 8 in the afternoon while her husband looked at the two with the face of a vicious pig.

I only had the option of drinking champagne and looking only at the policeman who was terrific and thinking about Oscar and the sex we had at the Biltmore Hotel and that Paul paid thinking that I would be alone to disconnect, get inspired and create the choreography for class ... So I ended our encounters on the mattress under the table in the garage office where my crazy love story began.

Oscar wanted to be an actor like the rest of the young people in LA, he was very well connected and was so attractive and with so much personality that every day he had 3 or 4 castings. I was having a hard time leaving him and he didn't want to leave the “Bailaora” as he called me with that Mexican accent that drove me crazy. He was a good friend of the famous architect Ricardo Bofill ‘s son , the husband of the first-born of Julio Iglesias, Chabeli Iglesias and with whom I got on very well and I was going out a couple of times and having conversations by email trying to calm down and explaining to me why not I could stay alone to have dinner with Oscar if it wasn't with the presence of his cousins and his father as bodyguards and as good Mexicans from the DF government, with their guns always into the jacket. I drew the conversation that my grandfather as General of the Spanish Army, from whom I took my artistic surname, always told me that the first thing I had to find out was where the gun was and his favorite advice: Long view , step short and annoy! ...

It all had to do with pistols when I was awakened by Paul's call telling me that he had not been able to send home the 25 students who could not live without his technique and choreography class from Thursdays and who decided to wait for me, including some who were driving two and a quarter hours each way from San Diego to receive my classes. As being a teacher , natural to me, while we were returning to LA Paul put the speaker on and I started the class on the phone. I will never forget the applause that everyone gave me when I arrived at 10pm, just the time that class ended. I arrived with a typical smile that if you drink, you can't "turn" and I tried to refund the amount of the class and say goodbye until Monday. But still they didn't want to leave, so that class was special only Bulerías party, we made a circle and they learned to improvise and express their joy and celebration through their body and the knowledge they already had of the beat, the rhythm and accents.

Later and as usual, although this time much later, we went to the Sushi Place and I told them in detail what happened in the Limousine, without talking about my erotic fantasy with Oscar and thus not hurting the feelings of my students in love.

Yelena Aguilar called me the next day apologizing for not keeping her promise and offering me $ 10,000 to dance 30m on her husband's birthday this time. I replied that I did not dance at private parties and please not to call me again.

The right hand of the famous Italian filmmaker and director of Spanish TV, Valerio Lazarov, once advised me in his office in the Serrano Towers in Madrid that whenever I could afford, to say no, that day my career would take a great leap towards triumph and respect.

$ 10,000 was already an amount to consider, but surely the vicious bear would not be confirmed just by watching me dance. And as thank God, I did not stop teaching general and private classes and earned a lot of money, I could say NO.

By the way, I also said no to dancing at the renowned Albuquerque Flamenco Festival because I couldn't leave my students without their desired classes. As the Festival saved the trip of bringing me from Spain, they offered me a very high budget. I would still lose money.

The artistic director did not accept my answer very well, but from that day on she looked at me with more admiration… That's life! .

Esther Ponce's experimental Flamenco is ready for the Valencian Director of Tourism to meet

It is very gratifying to have an idea like the experimental Flamenco in Valencia, carry it out and have managed to attract more than 20 foreign clients to Valencia in a short time and without marketing, who have passed through the Flamenco Art Center, and who have not only They learned a lot if not they have returned to their country with a better concept of Valencia.

His experience and approach to flamenco led by Esther Ponce will make you return without hesitation to the city of Turia.

Esther Ponce not only surrounds them with her passion and charisma from the first moment, her professionalism and a very long journey through different countries of the world where she has lived for long periods, she makes them fall in love.

«They also buy semi-professional shoes and a skirt to study with me.» That’s already the best! –
~ Esther Ponce

The foreigner is used to teaching flamenco very quickly and without discipline, anything goes, any shoe, any skirt, hanging out even parodying and even ridiculing flamenco.

With me if they want to study two private hours which is the minimum, they are given the option of buying or renting the shoes and none of them have thought twice about it to this day.

Definitely the Experimental Flamenco of Esther Ponce has an Angel!

From England, without a doubt the most special Experimental Flamenco we have had at the Flamenco Art Center in these two and a half years.

The Esther Ponce Stylized Flamenco Art Center has been open for two and a half years. El Ángel Every August 28, for Esther’s birthday, a new foreign student gives her a gift and the flamenco toast intensifies.

«The students do not want to miss the opportunity to study with me. When they start to study my technique they are hooked at the first second. Those who play sports and take care of themselves immediately identify with my stretching and feel safer for the rest of the class and those who don’t appreciate it and will surely start practicing it and taking care of themselves forever »
~ Esther Ponce

This year Esther thought that her Angel would be very busy due to the current pandemic situation and also that it would be a coincidence that another year happened.

But to Esther’s surprise it was like that and without doubt the most special flamenco toast for England.

«Discipline is my hallmark and not even the Covid has stopped us» «I have never doubted it and I will only teach classes with a mask»
~ Esther Ponce

After the experience of teaching classes with a mask? A private flamenco class for two hours without stopping, does Esther remember that when she and the student went out into the street they breathed for two seconds as if there were no tomorrow?According to Esther’s recent experience, with the mask you cannot see the total expression of the student, but the eyes also speak and flamenco is also expressed with the body.

With all the safety measures, the student disinfected her shoes, put hydroalcoholic gel on her hands, a temperature control was performed with a non-contact forehead thermometer and the student did not remove her mask during the two hours, only in the changing room that she only used to drink water.

“Now I can present my Experimental Flamenco to the director of Tourism of Valencia and let him roll with the little ham :)”
