Three years full of surreal adventures, successfully at a frenetic rhythm in Los Angeles, California

Chapter 13. I am named Ambassador of flamenco in the Los Angeles Consular Corps representing Spain

I had put up flyers in the facilities of the Park La Brea apartments announcing the new classes to flamenco for children and my student Maden, who was still in love with me, painted a beautiful portrait of me dancing in charcoal. It was the first time that I had not used a photo and it perfectly reflected the Disney style, Just as I asked.

In the United States it is not like in Spain that we have the washing machine inside the house and the clothesline is used. People share the laundry of the building where you wash and dry clothes at the moment, in huge machines that cost only a few quarters. While I was waiting for my clothes, a boy, Ryan, approached me, asking if I was the one on the poster, congratulating me on my recent performance for Antonio Banderas and that he had noticed that I was not advertising any web page. That he was dedicated to web design and gave me his card. I'm not sure if it was his accent, his smile, his hair, his body, his origin, his religion, but I fell in love. Today after 19 years it is still intact in my heart and Ryan with whom I still maintain contact, don't even know it!

I loved going to his house every morning, being very close to him on the computer and I dreamed of getting on his surfboard with him that was in front of us as a witness and still wet since Ryan went every day to surf in Malibu at 6 am and then we would work at

Only fighting people do that, those who make time for everything even if they have to get up early and I always identified myself with Ryan, who was growing very fast as foam in his profession, except when I got up early, which was fatal.

It was always clear to me that pleasure was not to be mixed with work and I was looking forward to finishing the web so I could meet Ryan for some chocolate cocktails at Lola’s West Hollywood.

The Consul called me to meet for coffee and offer to represent Spain among 100 countries as Flamenco Ambassador at the annual Consular Corps gala held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The Consul already knew that I was a theater dancer and that no one in my dressing room bothered me before to go on stage, but he also knew what was important to grow in my artistic career in Los Angeles.

After dancing I found a huge line of Consuls waiting for a photo with me. My heart told me to take a picture together and finish quickly to call Ryan with some excuse from the web and go see him, but my head helped me focus on the protocol, on saying the politically correct thing about each country, in each greeting and after each photo.

Later on I would receive a signed letter from each Consulate of 60 countries in the world in which it would say:

Miss Esther Ponce, since her arrival in Los Angeles at the end of 2001, has contributed to the dissemination of Spanish culture in this city and in Southern California, demonstrating at all times a great professionalism and knowledge of the culture and art of the flamenco…

This material was presented at the time of immigration in the city of New York where I would be granted the O1 visa, special abilities. They also received personalities such as the lyrical singer Montserrat Caballé or the soccer player David Beckham.

As always, destiny held a new fascinating adventure for me. It was Tuesday and Sofía, an North American girl, came to see my class. tall, dark hair , with bright eyes of a light color difficult to tell at first glance, lawyer and speaking Spanish with practically no accent to perfection. She told me that she wanted to learn to dance flamenco for the disco. I immediately got a smile, I invited her to sit on the bench in the studio while I explained that in my classes high-level technique and choreography were learned and that it was essential to have professional flamenco shoes. Normally my classes could be seen for a limited time unless you came as a listener paying a lower price. But the good connection with Sofía was enormous and I let her stay until the end of class, because I sensed that she would come later to the Sushi Place and that she would become my best friend.

At the end of the class, Sofía immediately asked me where she could buy the shoes, it was difficult since in LA there was only one very expensive store and also of low quality.

But Sofía was in luck since the students who had been with me from the beginning had ordered new shoes from the best manufacturer "Gallardo" and that my father would bring from Madrid on his next visit. So the second-hand market began and ended at the top of our favorite wooden table testing the sound of heels, while Sofía told us about the stand she had in the Rastro of Madrid selling Levis jeans when she was studying in Spain . To the rhythm of sake goes and sake comes.

Esther Ponce's experimental Flamenco is ready for the Valencian Director of Tourism to meet

It is very gratifying to have an idea like the experimental Flamenco in Valencia, carry it out and have managed to attract more than 20 foreign clients to Valencia in a short time and without marketing, who have passed through the Flamenco Art Center, and who have not only They learned a lot if not they have returned to their country with a better concept of Valencia.

His experience and approach to flamenco led by Esther Ponce will make you return without hesitation to the city of Turia.

Esther Ponce not only surrounds them with her passion and charisma from the first moment, her professionalism and a very long journey through different countries of the world where she has lived for long periods, she makes them fall in love.

You just have to read the dedications of all the foreigners who write in their precious notebook created for them and that are already adding more and more.

«They also buy semi-professional shoes and a skirt to study with me.» That’s already the best! –
~ Esther Ponce

The foreigner is used to teaching flamenco very quickly and without discipline, anything goes, any shoe, any skirt, hanging out even parodying and even ridiculing flamenco.

With me if they want to study two private hours which is the minimum, they are given the option of buying or renting the shoes and none of them have thought twice about it to this day.
«Being a polyglot, doors just open up to me» –

Definitely the Experimental Flamenco of Esther Ponce has an Angel!

From England, without a doubt the most special Experimental Flamenco we have had at the Flamenco Art Center in these two and a half years.

The Esther Ponce Stylized Flamenco Art Center has been open for two and a half years. El Ángel Every August 28, for Esther’s birthday, a new foreign student gives her a gift and the flamenco toast intensifies.

«The students do not want to miss the opportunity to study with me. When they start to study my technique they are hooked at the first second. Those who play sports and take care of themselves immediately identify with my stretching and feel safer for the rest of the class and those who don’t appreciate it and will surely start practicing it and taking care of themselves forever »
~ Esther Ponce

This year Esther thought that her Angel would be very busy due to the current pandemic situation and also that it would be a coincidence that another year happened.

But to Esther’s surprise it was like that and without doubt the most special flamenco toast for England.

«Discipline is my hallmark and not even the Covid has stopped us» «I have never doubted it and I will only teach classes with a mask»
~ Esther Ponce

After the experience of teaching classes with a mask? A private flamenco class for two hours without stopping, does Esther remember that when she and the student went out into the street they breathed for two seconds as if there were no tomorrow?According to Esther’s recent experience, with the mask you cannot see the total expression of the student, but the eyes also speak and flamenco is also expressed with the body.

With all the safety measures, the student disinfected her shoes, put hydroalcoholic gel on her hands, a temperature control was performed with a non-contact forehead thermometer and the student did not remove her mask during the two hours, only in the changing room that she only used to drink water.

“Now I can present my Experimental Flamenco to the director of Tourism of Valencia and let him roll with the little ham :)”
